Happy Friday everyone!
For today’s 49 cent Friday refashion, I chose this hot pink t-shirt that fit me (other than the neck being too tight).
Here’s a pic’ of my daughter wearing the shirt…
I decided to turn this shirt into a dress.
I started by turning it inside out and putting it back on my daughter. Then I pinned it where it was going to be taken in…
I used safety pins so that she could slip it off over her head without getting poked…
After she removed the shirt, I got busy sewing…
Then I trimmed off the excess material…
If I would’ve ended here, it’d be a long shirt/short dress.
But I decided to put some outgrown shirts to good use to lengthen the dress…
I just needed a strip from the bottom (hemmed) edge of each shirt, so I got busy cutting…
After getting all of my strips cut, I pinned the first strip under the hemmed edge of the t-shirt I was adding it to…
After getting it pinned right where I wanted it, I stitched it together…
Some of these shirts were a little wrinkly where I needed to stitch them, so I pressed them quickly with my iron…
After de-wrinkling all the strips, I pinned and sewed and pinned and sewed again, (like shown above) until it was all sewn together…
To give this dress a little more pizazz, I took one of the scraps that I cut from the original t-shirt, and made it into a flower…
To make the flower, I cut one of the scraps into a long rectangle. Then I folded the rectangle, (wrong sides together) and sewed a basting stitch down the length of the rectangle.
I then gathered the fabric by pulling the top threads and turned it to form the flower shape (shown in above pic’). After it was in the shape I wanted, I hand stitched the flower and added a cute button. Then I sewed a safety pin on the back of the flower and pinned it to the dress.
Here’s the finished frock…
Isn’t it adorable? Here it is with a belt…
I really enjoyed making this refashion for my daughter, and she was thrilled with the finished result. She grows like a weed, so being able to turn a 49-cent t-shirt into a cute girly dress certainly helps out with the family budget as well!
I hope you enjoyed today’s refashion!

Wow, great job! I love how you turned the t-shirt into something new and so lovely! The ruffles are great, too.
🙂 Thank you! And thanks for stopping by and checking out my post! 🙂
So cute and love the color blocking at the bottom that’s so in right now. It fits so well and she looks gorgeous in it.
🙂 Thank you so much for your nice comments! I really enjoyed doing a refashion for my daughter. I’m glad she liked the outcome too! 🙂
That’s amazing. Wish I had your sewing skills! I can’t even hem a straight line on a machine. The only sewing I do is mending by hand.
This 49c series looks fun!
– Anjana.
Thanks Anjana. I don’t feel like my sewing is very skilled! I love doing refashions because I’m too lazy to do a huge sewing project start to finish! 😉 Thanks for the nice compliment! I’m really enjoying this series too! 🙂
Very cute! Great job!
Thank you!
Oh my goodness! What a cute little sassy pants! I think she looks slightly more impressed with the result. 😉 I have been DYING to do one of these shirt makeover color block dresses. This makes me even more excited! Btw, I’d love to see your original creations. Not that this isn’t AWESOME, but I always love to see what comes straight from creative people’s brains. It gives contrast to one’s own work that helps an artist with their perspective and inspiration. Wow… Random… Anyway, this is adorable and that model is adorable. 😀

Oops. That was accidental 😛
Aaw, thank you so much! You’re so sweet! If you do make one of these, be sure to share the link. I’d love to see it! 🙂 And I can’t wait to see the wedding dress you’re working on! I love the picture you posted of your inspiration! 🙂
It’s up on Sew, How? even as we speak 🙂 or… I speak, because I’m the one “speaking”… Anyway.
Yay! I just checked it out. You are one creative lady! Love it! 🙂
CUTE! I was so happy when I learned the turn-it-inside-out fitting trick. It certainly worked well here. The belt is a nice finishing touch, too.
Thanks! 😉
It looks like I could do the first part to make some of my shirts a little more form fitting. Your daughter is adorable, and what a great idea!
Thanks Joy!
Pinworthy! So had to store this so I don’t lose it. I have an 8 year old who is long and lean and lives in leggings due to n0-butt-itus. It runs in my female kiddlets (my 9 months old bot got junk in his trunk, any way). Do it would be fun to to make dresses and tunics for the legging collection 🙂
Ha! “no-butt-itus” that’s hilarious! My 9-year old daughter has that same condition! 😉 She’s always been in the 95th percentile for her height, but only 50th for her weight, so she’s pretty much a bean-pole! I’m glad you thought my post pinworthy! Thank you, that made my day! 🙂
OMG you are so talented!!! Love this!!!
Thank you for stopping by, and for the sweet comment! 🙂

This is such a great idea! Your daughter looks really cute in her dress! I can’t get over how cheap the top was – charity shops here are much more expensive, I don’t think I’d ever find clothing for only 50p (even baby clothes!) I’m now totally hooked on your blog 😀
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you!
I really lucked out with my 49-cent finds! Most of the thrift stores around here aren’t that cheap either, but I found out that on Mondays one of the local stores discounts whatever colored tags that were 50% off the previous week down to 49-cents (but just on Mondays). So I’ve been pretty lucky with that. I also am a garage sale junkie (when the weather permits) and I’ve had a lot of luck finding sales that have clothing for as cheap as 50-cents! I think the more often you go, the more bargains you find.
Thanks for your nice comments!

So adorable. Doesn’t even look like the original shirt! Great job.
